Coffee Break: Don’t Go to the Hardware Store For Milk

Earlier last week, I was feeling a little frustrated after venting to someone, and receiving zero sympathy or validation.  As such, I was whining about my frustration to one of my Grade-A listener friends, and her response has now become my slogan of the month.  She said, “don’t go to the hardware store for milk.” Boom!

Eventually you have to realize that certain things you are trying to get from a particular source may be impossible.  The source may be unwilling or unable to provide that certain thing. Basically, we could save ourselves a world of frustration if we stop going to the wrong place for what we need.  Game-changer for me – literally and figuratively; I’m lost in a hardware store and I can chug some milk better than a newborn. The tricky part is, what if the hardware store sometimes has milk??

I decided the theme of 2019 for me would be “self-care.”  With January here and gone, I started to think about where I’m at with my progress.  Turns out, self-care is not just bubble baths and impromptu shoe purchases; it’s about taking care of yourself both physically and mentally.  Self-care is vague on purpose – it can mean whatever you need it to mean.  Some days, self-care means eating kale and hitting the gym; other days, self-care might be eating Nutella on the couch with a spoon while watching Marie Kondo.  Admittedly, that sparks joy for me!

2017 was about starting over, and finding my new normal after the great cross-country move to Asheville.  It was one hell of a year.

2018 was about braving the wilderness via running my first marathon (read more here: Runnin’ Down a Dream) and cutting out toxic people in my life.

2019 will be self-care – trying new things, visiting more National Parks, training and running another big race (which will be “Grand” to say the least, stay tuned), planning adventures with family and friends, and jump-starting this new decade I’ve entered… my 30s!

Here’s a look at 2019 so far…

For those of you who know me, you know how I feel about meat & cheese boards/charcuterie. They are one of my favorite meals because you can leisurely nosh and totally customize flavors to suit your taste. Also, it requires no cooking. I always purchase my cheese board favorites from Trader Joe’s because they have quite an assortment of delicious, unusual, AND affordable cheeses that rotate seasonally. Featured here, we have prosciutto, triple cream brie, cranberry goat cheese, 1,000 day aged gouda, fig preserves, bread & butter pickles, truffle oil-salted marcona almonds, and of course, crusty bread. [Thanks to my sister for the funny and accurate wine glass.]
Remember The Alamo? San Antonio, TX. I’m surprised how much I enjoyed this city. San Antonio > Austin.

“You don’t need those people. By stepping aside, they’ve done you a favor. Because what you’ve got left after the fools have departed are the old souls and the true hearts. Those are the über cool sparkle rocket mind-blowers we’re after. Those are the people worthy of you.” -Cheryl Strayed

Until next time, y’all. Adventure awaits. <3

With love, from Asheville.
